Automation
48x40 pallets that are operating on a conveyor needs new pallets made in order to not cause hold ups in the production line. One pallet not made to spec can cost much more than what a new pallet would cost vs used in this situation.

Pallet Racking
Optimizing your pallet racking for safety, and handling can pay itself many times over. These are generally not shipping pallets, and work for you long term on your racks. If you are looking to set up a warehouse a custom pallet is the better option most of the time.

Weight/Size Requirements
If you are transporting a heavy or large part a custom pallet is your best bet. Anything larger than 48x40 usually is not sold in the used market. It will either be a re manufactured product or a custom pallet. This will also greatly reduce any safety concerns.
